INTERNATIONAL MUSIC CAMP

The Minnesota Federation of Music Clubs annually offers scholarships to attend the International Music Camp. IMC is located in the picturesque International Peace Gardens which straddle the border between North Dakota and Manitoba. Recipients of these scholarships receive a week of concentrated study at the Camp. (Campers are responsible for transportation arrangements and costs and for items of a personal nature).

This summer school of fine arts is considered one of the best and is staffed by only highly skilled artist-educators. Campers from previous years report that each week-long session is filled with memorable instructional and performance opportunities, plus plentiful summertime recreation and chances to make new friends. Previous scholarship winners have often written most enthusiastically of their experiences at IMC.

To be eligible for scholarship consideration, candidates must: (1) be in grade 9-12 at the time the application is submitted (2) receive a Superior rating in the Festival of the year of application, (3) complete an application, (4) include two letters of recommendation; one from the applicant's present music teacher in the desired area of study, and (5) include an audio tape of the applicant performing two scales and two selections of his/her choice. In addition to pianists, applications from student vocalists and band and orchestral instrumentalists are encouraged.

Completed application must be received not later than April 15 to be eligible for consideration. (Download Application)

MUSIC IN POETRY INFO/CONTEST
Poetry is another thread running along side music through the tapestry of our lives and nurtures us much in the same way. It has many of the same elements; and like music, needs to be heard. Poetry has its own music when read aloud expressively.

Please include poetry at just one of your meetings/programs this year. Using poetry can be as simple as being aware of the poet who inspired the composer of a piece, or as elaborate as an hour-long program involving students, parents, and the general public.

Think about getting your students involved. See MUSIC IN POETRY CONTEST-Junior Division. Some suggestions:

  • Appoint a MIP chair who will be responsible to see that poetry is part of every meeting
  • Read the Hymn of the Month
  • Invite a local poet or Junior Club Member to share their poem
  • Encourage non-musicians, or members who do not perform to contribute with a poem
  • Encourage a speaking choir
  • Conduct a poetry workshop
  • Set a poem to music
  • Read poems accompanied by musical background
  • Include in your presentations the author of the lyrics, or how poetry influenced the composer
  • Have students write a poem for a Festival poster-make it a contest
  • Use poetry in a summer recital
  • April is poetry month-award a pizza to the best poem composer in the Jr. Club
  • Print a poem in the recital program that carries the recital's theme
  • Have a poem printed in the music section, or art section of the local newspaper, or other communications/publications

Thank you for bringing poetry to your community. As one of the arts, poetry is an important outlet for feelings.

There are no longer reports to file for the NFMC, but please take a moment and send any information on how your club uses poetry to Verna at 8995 North Shore Drive, Spicer, MN 56288.

TEACHER TRUST GRANTS
Sponsored by Rose Zygmanski

This is for you! After a busy year of teaching, performing, and/or directing, it's great to get re-charged! New ideas and innovations help us to refine our teaching style and methods. Performance/learning opportunities help keep us in touch with our students and challenge us to keep developing our skills. Oftentimes, there's been a class we would love to take, but we just didn't have the funds.

The Teacher Trust Grant has been set up to assist and encourage active music teachers with financial aid so they may attend workshops, register for university courses, participate in master classes, or take a series of lessons to further enhance their skills and, thus, improve their teaching. Grants may be awarded for $100, $150, or $200.

A written application must be received by September 1st for consideration at the MFMC Fall Board Meeting or by April 1st for consideration at the MFMC Spring Convention. The following information must be included:

  • A resume of education, teaching experience, and other pertinent information.
  • Two letters of support/recommendation - one from a teaching colleague and one from another MFMC member.
  • A letter that specifies the amount sought and explains how the applicant proposes to use the scholarship (such as to help fund private lessons or a workshop or classes, etc.) with dates.
  • When possible, printed matter describing the proposed course of study, such as a brochure or college catalog, should also be included.
