Carolyn Nelson from Fargo, ND is our North Central Vice-President. Attending from MN were myself, Karen Erickson and Mary Strasser. We extended our sincere thanks to our region for assisting with the National Convention – they hosted many receptions and helped us on site. NFMC 2006 Fall Session Treasurer’s Report

200 people registered for full session; 50 people registered for a day. Financial numbers are incomplete at this point. $15,668.64 was brought in through the $1 assessment for festival registrants; $13,105 registration, $27,776 meals, $9,000 for tours, $350 misc. income. MFMC auctioned off an apron for $100. Total receipts of about $66,134.86 - Expenses: $65,000. Balance of about $1,000, but there are bills outstanding.
NFMC 2006 Fall Session Report
Cheryl Schmidt
Cheryl attended the Council of Presidents meetings. Motion made and sent to the National Board requesting that there be no more closed meetings. Festival Bulletins will be available in March for use in the 2008 Festival year.
Special thanks expressed to the Planning Committee and especially Mary Angela Strasser, who received a gift.
New Business
NFMC Board Meeting Report
Mary Angela Strasser, MFMC Board Representative
Mary Angela attended the two board meetings. Much of the business was of housekeeping in nature, involving scholarships, etc. No action was taken on any business that would have an effect at the State level. She will be our representative at the 2007 board representative.
Nominating Committee/Election of MFMC representative to the National Board, Karen Erickson
Karen nominated, on behalf of the nominating committee, to elect Cora Barr. Betty Olson moved to elect Cora Barr to the MFMC representative to the National Board, second by Kathy Wilson. Motion carried.
MFMC Dues
No formal recommendation today to raise dues. MFMC dues have not been raised for at least 15 years. The cost of the website, increased Half Notes expenses and the hope of adding more scholarships have triggered this idea. Cheryl proposed forming a budget committee to work on this idea. Nadine gave information on dues structure. Dues paid to state is $4/member, of which we keep $2 and $2 goes to the National. We have 460 members. Individual members pay $20 of which $10 goes to National. $1120 in membership dues were kept last year. We keep a larger portion of Festival Fees than goes to National. Membership dues and Festival fees amount to about $9,000-$10,000 annually.
Discussion: Faith Farr suggested using advertising to pay for the mailing cost of Half Notes and also suggested using volunteers to do some of the work for the Half Notes and the website. Paid volunteers could significantly reduce costs. Kathy Wilson suggested keeping the $1/ registration to help add to the bottom line. Faith Farr suggested including a line item for people to donate to a new scholarship. Cora Barr suggested we need to be more realistic in how much it costs to keep doing our job.
Cheryl asked for volunteers to be on a budget committee for this matter.
Young Artist Piano Camp Awards
Two $350 scholarships have been awarded per year. This is not a federation funded camp. Student experiences have been both good and bad. Executive Committee recommends discontinuing the piano camps at UMD. Pat Steege moved that we discontinue the Young Artist Piano Camp Awards, seconded by Cora Barr. Motion passed.
New Membership Chairman, Mary Wescott.
New members will be contacted directly by Mary with information about MFMC. A discussion followed on needing a festival coordinator, to facilitate organizing a festival and enforcing the guidelines of the Festival Bulletin. Some teachers reported finding it difficult to place students playing various instruments, other than piano, at Festival sites.
