Treasurer's Report

The checking account is in good shape at this time because of Festival dollars received. However, expenses will increase when scholarships are paid out during the rest of the year. Report filed for audit.

MFMC Membership
Mary Wescott, Chair
One new member. Mary has received many phone calls from prospective members and has provided information to them. Mary will coordinate with Nadine Berg to verify membership numbers because some join MFMC directly through the National office. We willconsider using the advertising budget to promote membership through ads, etc.

Thank you from Emily Vomacka, Junior Composer Institute scholarship recipient.

Logowear

National Federation of Music Clubs National Convention
Salt Lake City, Utah: June 26 – July 1. Karen Erickson, Cheryl Schmidt, Cora Barr, and Mary Strasser will be attending.

MFMC State Convention and Festival Meeting
August 15 & 16, 2007
Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Minneapolis, MN.
Sharon Kaplan gave an update on the convention. Highlights will include performances by members of MFMC: Mela Daly, Soprano; Tom Linker, pianist; sessions on the new bulletin; Greek dinner; and more. Students will perform at an Honors Recital. Check the Spring/Summer 2007 Half Notes for information if you have students interested in performing.

West Central Keyboard Club new name is West Central Music Teachers Club

Junior Club Rating Sheet Awards
Duluth Music MTA, Fine Tuners, WC Festival Strings, Greater Hutchinson String Festival, Keyboard SW, Itasca, Music SW, Central Lakes Music Club.

MFMC Budget for 2007 – 2008
Budget committee members were Nadine Berg, Karen Erickson, Mary & Walter Strasser, and Cheryl Schmidt.
Recommendations:

  • reduction of one newsletter to a one page call per year
  • raise Adult Senior Club Dues from $4 to $12
  • raise Festival fees from $2.50 to $4, add $500 to fund Karen Erickson’s (incoming state president) trip to National Convention
  • add $75 registration fee for Mary Strasser’s trip to National Convention
  • Teacher Trust Scholarships: limit to three $200 scholarships
  • International Music Camp: limit to three $295 scholarships
  • Junior Composers Institute: limit to four $400 scholarships
  • Student Auditions: remain at $4000
  • reduce contributions to Inspiration Point from $500 to $100
  • discontinue scholarships to Opera in the Ozarks
  • transfer $5000 from checking to savings
  • Discussion about transferring $5000 to a CD instead of savings to earn higher interest.
  • A budget should be prepared and reviewed annually.

    Motion to accept the budget by Renee Peterson, seconded by Sharon Kaplan. Motion passed. Motion to accept the budget committee’s recommendations to include raising dues and Festival fees by Sharon Kaplan, seconded by Marla Adrian. Motion passed

JUNIOR DIVISION

Festivals
Cora Barr, Chair (absent)
Sent out revised Festival directives to everyone. Thanks to Cora for her work. Thanks from Nadine for great reports received from Festival site managers. The final report will be available at the August meeting.

Festival Cups
Susan Hoolihan, Chair (absent)
Final Festival cup report will be available in August. Blank engraving plates that were included with the Festival cups will be collected at August meeting. Susan Hoolihan is resigning her position and a new person will be recruited by the incoming state president.

International Music Camp/Summer Scholarships
Rose Zygmanski, Chair (absent)
Recommendation to award $295 International Music Camp scholarships to Katie Evan, flute; and Tia Lauve, piano. Motion to accept this recommendation by Pat Steege, seconded by Mary Wescott. Motion passed.

Junior Composer Contest
Pat Steege, Chair
Information is sent to club presidents and Festival site chairpersons and past participants each fall. Motion to increase entry fee from $14 to $20 per entrant made by Mary Wescott, seconded by Betty Olson. Motion passed. This year there were 22 entrants.

This year’s winners
Level 1: No entries
Level 2: 1st Jonathan Narlock; 2nd Aaron Foreman
Level 3: 1st Kate Meyer; 2nd Laura Steege
Level 4: 1st Kelvin Ying; 2nd David Johnson and Aaron Foreman.
Kelvin Ying and David Johnson advanced to national.

Junior Composer Institute Scholarships

Students must participate in the Junior Composer Contest to be eligible for the scholarship. Scholarships of $300 each will be offered to Kelvin Ying, David Johnson, Kate Meyer and Laura Steege. Alex Hetzer is an alternate and will be awarded a scholarship if any of the first awardees do not accept the scholarship.

Joyce Walsh Junior Disability Award and Minnesota Music Scholarships for Challenged Students

MFMC Insurance Coordinator

A reminder to everyone that they should consider their insurance needs for the up-coming year (September 2007-2008) and send ALL details to Kathy. The format is familiar:
1. Name of the Event
2. Event Location with correct street address
3. Site Manager-name address phone number, e-mail address
4. Date (s) of the Event
5. Ask your site if they actually must have a hard copy of the Certificate of Insurance (in which case it will be FAXED to the site’s office manager or secretary). Indicate YES or NO to Kathy, and if YES is the response, Kathy must have the FAX number and contact person’s name. In any event, your Festival or recital will be covered by insurance if you have responded to Kathy for inclusion.

STUDENT/COLLEGIATE DIVISION

2007 NFMC Biennial Student Auditions
Sheila Shusterich, Chair (absent)
MFMC winners were: Paul Bagley, Duluth, violin major at UW-Superior; Andrew Duren from AL, saxophone major at the U of M; Amy Hagensen, Duluth, UMD vocal performance & education major; and Nate Herfindahl, Two Harbors, UMD vocal music education and performance.
MFMC has a two-time winner limit on the awards for student auditions. As requested by chairman: motion to award the scholarship to Amy and Nate even though they have received the award twice already. Motion by Karin Boyce, second Jane Jensen. Motion passed.

Georgia Chapman Piano Study Award

No applicants this year. This is a program for students with financial need for lessons, Festival fess, etc. Applications are available on the MFMC website.

SENIOR DIVISION

Historian

Give materials to Judy.

Opera Report
Jane Jensen, Chair
Several Minnesota people have become quite well known in opera. There is a new opera company named Skylark Opera in Minneapolis. Jane resigned as Opera Chair today and was thanked for her many years of service.

Arts Advocacy
Sarah Twedt, Chair (absent)
Presented research showing the benefits of art programs for At-Risk Youth, and SAT scores. Minnesota Citizens for the Arts is an organization that has more information about the benefits of the arts in our communities.

Rose Zygmanski Teacher Trust Grants
Karen Erickson, Chair (absent)
Motion to award the grant to Karen Erickson by Betty Olson, seconded by Judy Zylstra. Motion passed.

Parade of American Music
Kathy Wilson, Chair (absent)
Kathy will report in August.

Adult Composer's Critique
Betty Olson, Chair
No applications this year. Sonia Johnston was the 2006 winner and may be available for the State Convention in August this year.

Half Notes Newsletter & Web Site

Nadine Berg gave notice that she will remain as state treasurer for one more term (2 years) and then resign from this position.
